The first Individualized Education Plan (or program)
The IEP is not a wish list, but a series of measures put in place to help a student develop. The objectives must be measurable and achievable.
You often have to write this plan before know your student. So you need to prepare for the first meeting with the parents: read the reports, make an outline of objectives, formulate questions.
It is also important to ask parents to do the same exercise. They know their child and can help you better identify his needs. What are his tastes, interests, strengths, weaknesses?
Above all, be realistic. You have to see where he is and get as close as possible to where he should be. Some parents have unrealistic expectations but as teachers, we have too. I always send a draft of my goals for parents to see my understanding of their child before the first meeting.
Some schools or school boards have their resource teachers write the IEP. Remember that you are the person who will be responsible for implementing the intervention plan, you must agree and be comfortable with the plan 100%.
For my part, I will never let someone else create it for me because it is a legal document. I also want the success of this plan.
