Day 0
I have found memories of my students on the spectrum. They taught me so much. First, my own limitations. Also that they are all different just like you and me. There is no perfect recipe for integration but your own degree of preparation and acceptance.
Let's pretend : you enjoy getting your class ready a couple of days before the beginning of your official school year.
You've got a grade one class and you decorate your walls with nice and colourful posters. You also have plants and an aquarium. After all it makes the class alive and children likes responsabilities. Pretty little things here and there to personnalize. Chairs and tables because you believe in cooperation.
After all that hard work, you are told that you will have a child with ASD. You are open to the idea since you will work with an integration aid. And since you got experience, it should not be a problem. So you just put aside the child's report and evaluation.
During the official ped days, you read the report diagonaly: normal IQ, autonomous, verbal. A comment worries you: will need to control his tantrums. It is too late to communicate and meet with the parents, school starts tomorrow.
